Marcos is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Mark, ultimately derived from the Latin Marcus. The deeper origin of Marcus is uncertain, though it is often connected with Mars, the Roman god of war, which gives the name a martial undertone even if that link is not universally settled. In the Christian world, however, the name’s strongest foundation comes through Saint Mark the Evangelist, author traditionally associated with the Gospel of Mark.
